Wayne Otto Kumite Course - 25th September 2010

Myself and Sensei Shaun Arrowsmith attended a 4 and a half hour course with Sensei Wayne Otto, 9 times gold medalist at the WUKO workd Karate Championships. Although I am still aching from the day, it was extremely enjoyable and informative. Some very practical kumite techniques were demonstrated by Wayne.
The first part of the afternoon was based around getting your opponant to throw a gyaku-zuki punch, the blocking and countering. The second part was around using the sweep, which included his signature move where a feint mi geri is thrown, whilts keeping the body covered, then dropping the foot done behind the opponents front foot, punching reverse punch, then sweeping and following up with another gyaku-zuki, when the opponent drops to the floor.

The course was only £20 for the 4 and a half hours and very good value for money. My thanks to Sensei Wayne Otto for his time and answering my numerous questions on the day.

Increase in Club Subs.

There has been a need to increase the club subs as from this Tuesday. Adults will be £2.50 and children (Under 16's) will be £2. This decision has been taken to ensure the continuation of the club. Dave has been running the club at a loss for some time now and obviously we cannot expect this to continue. I hope everyone understands the need to do this. It is still extremely good value as most clubs charge around £4 to £5 per session.

Quest to source the lost Anshin Ryu Kata, Anshin Sho and Anshin Ni.

I contacted an old student of Sensei Keith Bell's (The founder of Anshin Ryu), Sensei Paul Walker to see whether I could track down anyone who still remebrs the the kata that Sensei Bell formulated specifacally for Anshin Ryu. These were Kata Anshin Sho and Anshin Ni. This was after a comment made by Sensei Steve Wilkinson, who said that it would be great to start doing these two kata as part of our syllabus, as they were the only two kata specifically for Anshin Ryu, but unfortunealtey he could not remember them.

After a search on the internet I found refernece to a Sensei Paul Walker, who now lives in California, but is still a practising Karateka who is now a 5th Dan. We corresponded, and out of interest, here is the email that passed between us, which sound promising for at least Anshin Sho.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your e-mail and it's good to hear that Anshin-ryu is still alive and strong in Newton Aycliffe. I used to train at the same community center many years ago on Tuesday evenings in addition to my weekly lessons at the Darlington club and also my visits to the Hurworth club. Please pass on my best wishes to Sensei Steve Wilkinson as he used to help me out a lot when I was about 14 and 15 years old after I had passed my Shodan. I always respected him a lot and I'm glad to hear that he has finally been awarded his Sandan. He has been training for years.

Anyway before I get to Anshin-sho, let me just clarify something. I took and passed my Shodan with Keith Bell in December 1987 and my Nidan with Keith in December 1989. Shortly after that Keith stopped training and teaching and I continued together with Peter Davison, Chris Southwick and Dennis Slater of the Hurworth group. If I remember, Gary Howlett of the Newton Aycliffe group was still training too although not as actively.

Peter, Chris and myself went to the Isle of Mann in January 1993 to test under Frank Newton of the Isle of Mann Federation. Peter and I passed Sandan and Chris passed Nidan. We tested using the Anshin-ryu syllabus but my Sandan was awarded by Frank Newton and not by Keith Bell.
As far as I know nobody tested to Sandan under Keith Bell but if they did then it would probably have been Dave Oliver or Gary Howlett as they were the senior grades at the time. Arthur Coates was also a great karate-ka in my opinion and he ran the Catterick group.

OK, onto Anshin-sho. I did learn Anshin-sho to a good level but I never learned or saw Anshin-ni. I'm sure it existed but Keith may have been finalizing the kata as I never saw him teach it. Anshin-sho was a fun kata with parts of Jion, Ji'in, Bassai (Passai), Nijushiho (Niseishi) and Gojushiho. I actually managed to recreate the kata from what I remembered a few years ago but I have since forgotten it again. I will try to piece together again what I know and then get back to you but I fear that it won't be the exact version of the kata that I was taught. Isn't Keith Bell around anymore? I'm sure he'd be happy to pass on his kata again to people who genuinely want to learn. Other people who knew Anshin-sho were Peter Davison and Dennis Slater. I'm sure that Dave Oliver and Gary Howlett may also remember it.

Anyway Andy, thanks for contacting me and please follow up again in a couple of weeks. I will try to put together what I know and remember and then I'll pass it on. Also if you have any more questions about the good old days, I'll be happy to share my memories too. I'm sure Sensei Wilkinson has plenty of input to give on that too.

As for my karate now, well I am a student of Master Hirokazu Kanazawa. I spent three years at his Headquarters Dojo in Tokyo from 1996 to 1999. I have followed him ever since and currently hold the rank of 5th Dan under Master Kanazawa. His eldest son Nobuaki-sensei will be visiting my dojo in February of next year and then Master Kanazawa will be visiting in June of next year also with his son Nobuaki-sensei. Life is good and karate is good.

It will be great for Sensei Steve and David and they were the ones that mentioned about the lost Anshin-Ryu kata, and it would be a bit of a late Christmas prezzie for them if you can piece it together.

Sensei David Blackburn and Sensei Steve Wilkinson both passed their Sandan (3rd Dan) on Saturday 12th December, and I, (Andy Bailey) passed my Nidan (2nd Dan). All of us want to express our thanks to the other blackbelts, you have took the brunt of the instructing whilst we have been training over the last few months and appreciate your support in this.

Thanks to Sensei Bob Anderson (5th Dan Karate), for coming over to our club from Peterlee to conduct the gradings.

Also Sensei Marty passed his Ju-Jitsu Shodan (1st Dan) black belt grade on Sunday. Congratulations Marty.

Sensei Iain Abernathy Course - 3rd October at Thornaby

The course this time concentrated on the use of Shuto-uki within Kata bunkai. Sensei Abernathy started with a few drills which start off with both sides in left stance with a fighting guard. The attcking side firstly using the right hand to push away the guard on the others left arm then striking shuto to the neck. Then the left hand was used to open up the the guard followed again by a shuto the the neck. The attacker then stepped forward and repeated with the other side. Once completed the drill was repeated with the roles reversed.

The drill was then repeated with the left hand opening up the guard first and the shuto uki to the neck with the left hand, followed by the tight had pushing the guard away then shuto to the neck.

Again this was repeated on bothsides, then the roles changed over and repeated. The drill was meant to flow without any breaks. they were then added together to increase the complexity.

Following on from this the bunkai was used from Pinan Shodan , with the the follow up of the use of nukite after the shuto uki's. This was expressed as a smash into the chest rather than the use of a spear hand strike. It was also demonstrated with the hand on the hip as in Wado Ryu/Anshin Ryu and with the application from Shotokan with the right hand under the right elbow.

Linda kindly video'd myself and Sensei Dave going quickly through the drills in the break as a reminder. (No edits so a bit rough and ready).

We then looked at taking bunkai from different kata's and merging them together to cope with different situations. The following video's show the drills from this excersise.

Isle of Mann Karate Federation Easter Competition 2009

Well done to everyone that entered this years Easter competition and thanks to all those who came to support the club. A smaller attendance this year than usual, but no less spririt, enthusiasm and sportmanship from those that entered.

I have a number of video clips thanks to Andrew Smith's camera and Sean's dad acting as camera man for most of the comp. I have a vast amount of photo's of well.

First of all down to results.

Tim came second in the individual senior Kumite event with Andrew Smith just missing out on a trophy for third place, having to retire after a ham string injury.

Sean, Tim and myself (Andy Bailey) came first in the team Kumite event and I came first in the weapons Kata event.

Iain Abernathy Course, October 18th 2008

Sensei Dave Blackburn, Linda Croarkin and myself, Sensei Andy Bailey attended a seminar/training session at Thornaby on the 18th October with Sensei Iain Abernathy, 5th Dan. It was a well spent 5 hours. We concentrated on grappling and take downs. Sensei Iain went through the 9 throws that Shihan Funakoshi presented in a book to the Emperor when he went over to mainland Japan from Okinawa to show him the martial art of Karate that was being practised on the island. At the end of the session, Iain was kind enough to read them out in order so we could video them on my phone. Excuse the poor execution of these as we had only just been shown them and were still a bit unsure, but it was an excellent reminder as we would have forgotten most of them by the Monday as there was so much to take in. The throws are in order:-

2. Spinning top - Komanage

3. To encircle the neck - Kubiwa

4. Half Wheel - Katawaguouman

Just a quick note. The Adult fees has increased from £1.50 to £2.00 a session. This is still extremely cheap.The club does not operate at a profit and any money is put straight back into the club. On some sessions we were operating at a loss and therefore have had no choice but to increase the fees.

King James Comprehensive Arts Week, July 2007.

Sensei Dave Blackburn is a teaching assisitant at King James 1st Comprehensive School at Bishop Aukland. As part of their Arts Week he was asked if he could hold sessions on Karate. The event was extremely succesful, with a number of Senior Grades volunteering with Dave to give an insight into Anshin Ryu Karate to a group of students from the school.

Guest Instructor visits the club: Sensei Arthur Lockyear from Durham Aiki Do

Our thanks to Sensei Arthur Lockyear, 4th Dan, Shidoin from the British Aiki Kai, who was our guest Instructor on Sunday the 3rd June.

Sensei Arthur runs the British Aiki Kai, Aiki-do Club in Gilesgate in Durham. He was one of the first students of Chiba Sensei who brought Aiki-do to our shores in 1960. Sensei Arthur has been practising martial arts now for over 40 years. He brought some of his senior grades down to the club and kindly took the lesson. He went through a number of simple but effective techniques that will be a useful addition to our armoury, and demonstrated some weapons techniques and Kata.

The Club is based at the Neville Parade Community Centre on Neville Parade, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

Training times are:

Tuesdays: 7pm to 8.30pm
Sundays: 11.30am to 1pm

All welcome from 7yrs up.

Anshin-Ryu Karate has its history in both Wado-ryu and Shotokan Karate.

here is an extract from the website of our sister club, Zanshin Kai explain a bit of history.

"Anshin-Ryu was the style of Karate that was founded by Keith Bell in the early 1980's. Keith Bell was a 4th Dan in Wado-Ryu Karate and regularly trained under Kanazawa Sensei. It was this influence of Shotokan Karate that Keith incorporated into his training and adapted to his Wado-Ryu which bore the new style Anshin-Ryu (The way of the Heart & Mind). Anshin-Ryu in its basic form is still very much Wado-Ryu. All the Kata are Wado-Ryu based, but there are advanced Kata taken from other styles. The influence of Shotokan is very evident in the deep stances and power techniques. The symbol for Anshin-Ryu is the white dove of Wado-Ryu below the Shotokan Tiger."

The club practises traditional Karate, but also enjoys sharing the experience of a number of senior members from different styles such as Shotokan, Kickboxing, Ju-jitsu, Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do. We are a very open club and anyone is welcome to join.
